Spotlight On: Aion: Tower of Eternity

We recently had a chance to see the updated content that will appear in Aion: Tower of Eternity at launch. We recently had a chance to see the updated content that will appear in Aion: Tower of Eternity at launch. The new updates are part of the "1.5 update," which has already gone live in the original Asian version of the game (NCSoft plans to keep the Western version of game more or less up-to-date with the Asian game within two months' worth of updates), and the US team already has an established pipeline to take content from Asia and translate it into English while also localizing the content for Western audiences by adding many more quests and story-driven details. The US team suggests that about 75% of the content remains the same, but a great deal of content is still added by the localization to make the new stuff more-relatable; for instance, many new "Western-looking" character faces that resemble well-known Western actors have been added. Also, humor is a big part of Aion's lore (both in the original version and the Western version), but not all jokes translate from culture to culture.

The pre-release version of Aion just got a bunch of new pre-release content with the 1.5 update.

Otherwise, Aion's prerelease preparation continues to chug along with more than a million players in the beta and more than 3 million hours logged worldwide; the game is, again, already up and running in Asia and planned for launch in North America and Europe soon, with approximately 6 servers per territory to make sure each area gets good performance. The 1.5 update adds 14 new zones to explore, many of which focus on player-versus-environment ("PvE") gameplay, including new hunting grounds and new raid bosses to challenge. Interestingly, players in Asia have actually requested additional PvE and raid content--uncharacteristic for an audience that typically seems to crave heavy-duty player-versus-player ("PvP") content, though some of Aion's higher-end PVE content has a competitive bent to it, since raid bosses carry the best loot and rewards, so in many cases, teams of players will compete to see who can get to the boss and the loot quickest.

Aion's Western development team described the ongoing reception of the game to Western players as being positive. The game has several features that might appeal most strongly to really hardcore players, such as a positional combat system that grants minor offensive and defensive bonuses to characters who are moving while fighting, and a "stigma" system that lets you customize your character's role by embedding stigma stone items into your weapons and armor--the recent 1.5 update actually added three new additional slots and new ways for stigmas to branch out so that players can create even more-customized characters.

But the team is also looking to build in other features for players of all skill levels. For instance, Aion will have various chat channels for different languages, as well as a handy auto-join group feature that will let you search for and remotely (and automatically) join open groups. In addition, even though Aion's characters start out as tall, shapely humanoids, it offers a full body customization that some players have really taken to, even going so far as to create entire legions (the game's version of guilds) that look similar--for instance, there are no dwarf characters in the game by default, but some players have gone so far as to create dwarf guilds that recruit only characters that look like dwarves.

You can fly into action in Aion later this year.

We then jumped into the game itself to see some of the new zones that have been added, including an Abyss PvPvE zone full of new "Balaur" monsters (the fiends that inhabit the Abyss that separates the two halves of Aion's world), as well as a higher-level version of the game's early training ground, overrun by the Balaur, who have started to emerge into the other parts of the world as part of the 1.5 update's storyline. Like with Aion's other zones, the new zones are colorful and detailed, as are the monsters and characters.

Aion's beta events have come to a close and the game is gearing up for its launch in September.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm

We get our hairy and little green hands on the two new races announced at this year's BlizzCon.

Today Blizzard flexed its might and threw its rabid massively multiplayer online game fans a bone by ending speculation about the announcement and details for the next expansion pack for its World of Warcraft franchise. Just nine months since launching its Wrath of the Lich King expansion, the new pack, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, will forgo the introduction of any new playable classes and, instead, focus on adding two of the game’s most requested races--Goblins and Worgen--to the playable roster.

Chris Metzen, Blizzard Entertainment’s vice president of creative development made the announcement to the thunderous applause of the convention’s 20,000-strong attendees. We got our hands on a work-in-progress build of the game, which was playable at the show to coincide with the announcement, and took the two new races for a spin.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is taking a slightly different approach and will go as far as to drastically change the physical landscape of the planet. After keeping out of the limelight and presumed defeated, Deathwing, leader of the Black Dragonflight, is positioned to return and become the game’s new antagonist as Azeroth is literally torn asunder. Adding a new continent is one thing, but Cataclysm is already setting the bar high on tearing Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdom realms a new one. Huge volcanic gullies have been cut into the countryside, leaving pieces of land precariously teetering and on the verge of collapsing into the lava below to turn the Barrens into the new Burning Steppes. Elsewhere in Azeroth, the earthquakes have caused huge waterfalls to appear and floods to occur, leaving even the most vibrant parts of the neighbourhood looking pretty trashed. Azshara looks to have been hit pretty hard with most of its trees felled, which leave wide open spaces where there was thick forest before. It’s not all bad news, though, as zones like Desolace have somehow managed to spring to life, transforming their dustbowl environments into lush, verdant fields covered in grass and trees.

As players have come to expect, the expansion will also increase the current player cap and allow you to gain experience again. Interestingly, Blizzard is only adding a modest five additional levels to take it to level 85. Although Blizzard is including only half as many levels as we’ve seen in the last two expansions, it is promising to add just as much (if not more content) in a smaller package. These perks will come in at least three major new abilities per class, a new secondary profession, archaeology, and a new “Path of the Titans” quest line linked to crafting high-end items for your current job descriptions. You’ll also now be able to use your flying mounts in Azeroth, resolving a major bugbear suffered by WoW fans. Though from the sound of it, you shouldn’t expect to be able to take to the skies before hitting 85 because Blizzard is treating it as a reward, not a right.

We jumped into the driving seat and took both of the new playable races for a spin. The Alliance will gain access to the Teen Wolf-looking humanoids called the Worgen, while Horde players will be able to play the ingenious and greedy Goblins. We tried out the Worgen first, and though we were able to roll fresh characters, there was no option to create a female version or customise the look of the human form of our character. All new characters created began at level five, unlocking many of the basic skills. This was presumably to get players up and running faster and into the meat of the experience. Notoriously easy to level, we took up our bow with a hunter and launched into Darkhaven, the Worgen starting area. The zone immediately struck us as a combination of the Darkshire and Death Knight starting area Ebon Hold because of their muted colour palettes of grays and browns.

We began our experience trapped in a torture device with our head and hands bound while villagers stood around watching. A nearby non-player character promises that we will be healed, and after accepting a nearby quest to drink a potion from local chemist Krennan Aranas, we’re freed and let into the town. It’s here we’re given the ability to switch in and out of Worgen and human form at will. It’s a purely cosmetic change, though once you enter combat, you’ll automatically become Worgen. Meeting with Aranas and his associates, we were given a series of quests that saw us needing to locate a crate full of reagents to the southeast, kill Forsaken guards, and cull the local Abomination population by tossing barrels on their heads and shooting them until they exploded.

In a farm cellar nearby, we located our next contact, Lord Godfrey, who asked us to wipe out nearby Forsaken combatants. A distressed mother present is taking up the cause against the undead and requests we find her children, Cynthia, Ashley, and James, who are lost around the area. Once we’d completed the tasks, we were given the job of commandeering a catapult to fling ourselves onto a pair of nearby ships in order to kill the ship captains, Anson and Morris.

Worgen racial abilities were already implemented in our build and included a 1 percent damage buff, a hefty resistance to enemy curses--reducing their duration by some 15 percent--a six second dash on a three minute cooldown, and a 15 point skinning bonus without the need for a skinning knife. The latter of which makes perfect sense given you have such lovely big claws with which to shred targets.

Tossing our hairy human to the side, we switched our allegiances to the Horde with a view to rolling a Goblin. We decided to stick with the hunter class, and after spawning into the world, we found ourselves clinging to life on a bit of driftwood. A short soliloquy from a nearby NPC revealed that the Goblins had been caught in the crossfire during a battle between the Horde and the Alliance. As is only fitting, you’re jolted back to life (after a couple of attempts) with the help of a pair of Goblin jumper cables and given the task of rescuing fellow Goblins caught in the skirmish and trapped in nearby floating escape pods. You’re given a pair of nifty flipper gadgets, which increase your swim speed to get the job done. They were also particularly useful for deftly avoiding the sharks patrolling the water near the crash site.

Once back on dry land, we were given quests that revolved around locating and acquiring missing crates of tools, killing young Teraptor hatchlings, and--in typical Blizzard humour style--feeding bundles of explosive-laden bananas to monkeys and watching them detonate as they chowed down. Farther down the coast, we were given a short escort mission that saw us protecting Goblin miners and returning an Orc journal found on a slain comrade to reveal more of the story behind the battle raging between the two factions.

Like the Worgen, Goblin racial attributes were available for a sneak peek and are unsurprisingly engineering and financially motivated. “Best Deals Anywhererewards you with the best gold price for items regardless of your reputation; the vendor “Better Living Through Chemistry” increases your alchemy skill by 15 points; and “Time Is Money” increases your attack and casting speed by 1 percent. Rockets are a Goblin’s best friend, and the rocket jump ability will propel you forward a good distance with a two minute cooldown. The “Rocket Barrage” racial is also on a two-minute cooldown and deals fire damage to enemies. “Pack Hobgoblin” allows you to access your bank remotely for up to a minute once every half hour and provides a handy way to deposit precious Goblin loot when you’re out and about.

We’ve been confined to the two starting zones for the new races so far, so we have yet to see the real effects the cataclysm is having on the world around us, but we’re already eagerly awaiting the chance to get out and do some exploring. Blizzard hasn’t indicated any expected time frame for the release of the new expansion, but this looks to just be the tip of something much, much larger, and we'll be following it with interest.

Dungeon Hero Impressions

We take a tour through a bustling goblin city and get a glimpse of a dungeon world where monsters are people too.

If you stroll into any old video game dungeon these days, odds are you will find a clutch of monsters lurking around a treasure chest, spoiling for a fight. When it started in on its new action game Dungeon Hero, developer Firefly Studios wondered, "Why are they there?" To answer that question, it's creating a gameworld that features a fleshed-out society where merchant, soldier, and vagrant goblins go about their daily business instead of merely loitering about. We watched a few demo segments that showed this society in action and introduced us to the human protagonist who immerses himself in the goblin world in the course of a larger adventure.

The first segment we saw featured the dungeon hero himself standing on a long barge, travelling slowly down an underground canal. He is a tall, muscular fellow with no shirt and no hair on his head. He wears a shield on his back, a sword on his hip, and a belt across his chest packed with throwing knives. We're told he's no virtuous knight; rather, he's a brute who gets tricked into entering the goblin city where he gets embroiled in a larger conflict. There's a war raging between two goblin factions, but this gets overshadowed when a goblin miner digs too deep and unleashes death itself from the bowels of the earth. Out of this breach, stream the real monsters of Dungeon Hero, sinister black monstrosities led by an evil necromancer. These are the tougher foes that the protagonist will face as the game progresses.

As the barge passed serenely through the green, murky water, we watched with delight as the canalside docks revealed a slice of everyday goblin life. Porters walked hither and yon with boxes of varying shapes and sizes, drunks got sick over the side of the wharves, and neighbors casually conversed. Though the goblin speech audio wasn't in the build we saw, we were told these conversations are one of the key ways you will find out what's going on in the world. Dungeon Hero is an action game, so you won't be running up to goblin citizens and asking them what's new. You might overhear news about enemy forces or hear about an invasion in one of the mines, and it's up to you to process this information and decide what to do next. Though it will be a fairly linear adventure, there will be side quests that you'll be able to pick up by keeping your ears open.

The next segment found our hero making his way through the back trenches of one of the goblin armies. The wooden walls and bright orange sky offered us reassurance that the adventure wouldn't all unfold in dark, dank dungeons. Our presenter also mentioned environments, such as battlefields, mines, airships, and fortresses. As our protagonist walked on, we saw triage units where injured goblin soldiers were tended to by goblin surgeons with sharp saws whose medical acumen we doubted even before we saw the stack of filled coffins. Continuing to walk the trenches, our hero passed goblins relaxing by reading poetry (yes, there will be goblin poetry) and playing stringed instruments, as well as generals evaluating maps and planning battle strategy. Even in this early build, there was a variety of different animations and characters, which helped add depth to the world.

Further on, our hero ran into some enemy goblins and, pulling out his sword, began to hack them to pieces. The combat was still unpolished, but our presenter explained that attacks will be mapped to certain buttons and won't require complicated combos to pull off. As he fought, a red rage meter built up in the upper left-hand corner. Engaging rage will make every attack more powerful, so a shield bash might become a powerful throw. As you vanquish foes, you'll level up, and a simple skill tree will allow you to choose which attacks to unlock and which attacks to strengthen by leveling them up. This is the closest Dungeon Hero will get to role-playing game territory because it will focus predominantly on combat.

In between the combat sections, there will be more relaxing levels, such as the barge segment we saw, but the third and final section took combat to a whole new level. After traveling through some caves full of foliage illuminated by shafts of sunlight, our hero arrived in a wide cavern area littered with bones. At the other end of the room, loomed a hulking monster that looked like the Rancor creature from Return of the Jedi. After dealing a significant damage to the beast, our hero ran up its back and stabbed it in the neck. This execution flowed naturally as part of the encounter, but there will be a number of other execution moves that you can perform on other enemies.

The most compelling element of Dungeon Hero in our E3 2008 demo was the diverse and detailed goblin life that we witnessed. We're told that other creatures in the game will also exhibit social behavior, and we're looking forward to seeing more strata of these societies in the coming months. Our presenter also mentioned that the game will feature downloadable content that will take the form of arcade-style challenges that can be played split-screen, cooperatively, or competitively. Dungeon Hero isn't slated to release until next year, but we'll be sure to bring you more as soon as we can.

Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited Preview

In many ways, Eberron Unlimited is not a “new” release for the Dungeons & Dragons Online massively multiplayer online game from Turbine; it really qualifies more as a re-imagined upgrade for the game.

While not launching until August 4, Turbine agreed to allow a look at the model in development during a beta release and what Eberron Unlimited brings foremost to the table is a micro-transaction window that will allow players to open the window and buy items from just about anywhere in the game.

What does that mean? If you have the coin in the account, which you can purchase with real-world currency, you can be in the midst of a dungeon and buy health potions. But there is much more to it than that. There is a new race that can be purchased from within the game, and a new class – the Favored Soul.

The level cap is being raised to 20 and under the new model, players can buy the adventures they want rather than pay a monthly subscription fee. The system is geared to allow players to pay for what they want, rather than be saddled with the elements of the game they do not care for.

The rise in the player cap means new skills and the new class is one of those where players can go either on the healing side or go damage-oriented. But the Favored Soul is more than just spells. The class is also pretty handy with weapons as well.

Improvements are being made to the combat system as well and the marketplace is one again thriving.

For those who have not played D&D Online (often referred to as DDO), this is one of the quintessential dungeon crawlers that allows players to gather in main city areas, and then either group for dungeon quests or enter them solo (as you enter the dungeon you are given many options as to the difficulty level and one of them is the solo dungeon). Each of the quests tells part of the overriding story and it is all about the drops as well as the adventure.

Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited PC screenshots

There seems to have been some graphical updates to the game since it was rewied on Just-Gamers back in May of 2006, and this is now looking much crisper and is more of a treat to the eyes than previously remembered.

It was a nice journey back to Ebberon, and the EU edition was a surprise in many regards.

There are new adventure packs available (for purchase) and these even include a 12-player raid.

The taste of DDO: EU was a short one, to be certain, but the game sparkled in many ways and fans of the D&D ruleset, role-playing games and fantasy dungeon crawlers should find much to like about this game. The micro-transaction format might not be to everyone’s liking, but the way it seems to be implemented in EU is a thoughtful one that puts the premium on players getting the most out of their experience by being able to customize it.

Description

<

DIMENSITY offers a unique 3D fantasy world with its own environments and inhabitants. The world has its legends, political plots and great historical battles. Geographically the civilized part of the world is surrounded by a great ocean and divided in two by great mountains. The north and the south are little known and veiled with myths and legends of a dark past. The major intelligent inhabitants are the Humans and the Firbolgs. The Humans have great kingdoms to the west of the mountains.

The most powerful is the Kingdom of Dumnoni, whose kings claim to be almighty and everyone must obey their orders. Far to the east of the mountains in hostile marshlands, the race of the Firbolgs united in ancient times and formed a shamanistic culture. Although the Humans often call them ‘Savages’, the Firbolgs are proud and just people. They are born in war, they live to fight and die in the name of the War God.

Little is known about the fearsome Ghosts. The knowledge of their origin seems lost in present days. However many of the scholars believe they are souls, that are bound to the world until they achieve the right to find rest in the true death.

Almost nothing is known about the Elementals. Actually many believe they haven’t existed at all. They are source of legends and myths and none has been able to see them for many generations.

At the present the Kingdom of Dumnoni tries to expand towards the territories of the Firbolgs and force them to kneel to the crown. A goal that proved not easy to achieve as the time revealed. The race of men is separated however by religious disjunction and many people disagree that the mighty kings of Dumnoni are true bearers of the will of gods.

Features

  • Create a leader choosing from four available races (Human, Firbolg, Elemental and Ghost) with two classes each (warrior and mage).
  • Make your hero advance learning from available skills and magic spells of your choice.

  • Explore an immersive and hostile Heroic Fantasy world.
